Diane Newman
Diane Newman, MNC, FAAN is a nurse practitioner who has provided services for
persons with urinary incontinence and related problems in ambulatory, home care
and long term care settings in the Philadelphia area since 1986. In 2000, she
was appointed the Co-Director of the PENN Center for Continence and Pelvic Health
at the Division on Urology of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in
Philadelphia. Ms. Newman received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from
the University of Pennsylvania. She is certified as an adult nurse practitioner
by the American Nurse Credentialing Center. She has been appointed a fellow
by the American Academy of Nursing. Over the past 15 years, Diane has developed
an established reputation in state-of-the-art assessment and behavioral treatment
of urinary incontinence and is a respected leader in the field.
She was appointed the Chair of the Committee on Promotion, Organization and
Education in Continence for the World Health Organizations 2001 International
Consultation on Incontinence.
She has an appointment to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(formerly the Health Care Financing Administration-HCFA) Scope and Severity
of Nursing Care Deficiencies panel of experts in long term care. Ms. Newman
also has an appointment to the FDA Advisory Committee, Gastroenterology and
Urology Devices Panel of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Department
of Health and Human Services. She is a member of the Project Task Force for
the National Association For Continence (NAFC) Blueprint of Continence Care
Guidelines for Assisted Living Facilities. Ms. Newman was a nurse scientist
for the Association of Womens Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses
research on Continence in Women.
She is the author of The Urinary Incontinence Sourcebook (a book for the lay
public), a member of the National Association for Continences Project
Advisory Council, and was Co-Chair of the 1996 Agency for Health Care Policy
and Research (formerly AHCPR, now AHQR), Department of Health and Human Services,
Clinical Practice Guideline Update panel on Urinary Incontinence in Adults:
Acute and Chronic Management. A prolific writer, Ms. Newman has written
more than 75 scientific papers, chapters, and articles and is regularly published
in texts and major journals. She has recently completed a book titled Managing
and Treating Urinary Incontinence that was published by Health Profession Press
in 2002. In 1996, Ms. Newman created a bladder health promotion program called
Dry Expectations, which is conducted in senior centers throughout the County
of Philadelphia. She continues to provide services to PCAs Long Term Care
Options program for seniors.
